Developing a Positive Mental Attitude

Because the development of a positive mental attitude can be a truly daunting task for many people, the best way to begin is with a plan.  All truly great endeavors, such as the making of the Empire State Building or the creation of the United States of America, each began with a plan.  If the plan is a good one to start, it can later be improved upon and made to be even better.  The beginning, however, will require a good plan and a devotion to success.

Once the plan has been set into order, it is best to give it a real practical edge.  How exactly will you carry out your plan each day?  How will you keep an eye on your progress and give yourself a regular assessment about your attitude?  Here are some tips to get you started and to make your plan for a positive attitude more successful.

First, decide on just two or three things that you could do better to make your attitude a more positive mental attitude each day.  Some people consider daily meditation to be a great way of improving their mental attitude throughout the day.  It is easy to assess your progress with meditation because you simply mark it on your calendar each day that you sit still for 20 or thirty minutes.  Over time, as you see the days being marked off consistently, you will also begin to see an improvement in your ability to sit still and to achieve a more calm mind.  Then, after you have proven yourself to be truly dedicated to the task, you can increase the time to 30 or 40 minutes each day.  This is one way to build up a more positive mental attitude in your life.

Another tip for creating a more positive mental attitude is to practice exercising several times a week. This can improve your health and your general attitude.  It can also give you more confidence and make you more attractive to other people.  This can do wonders for your self esteem and eventually lead to a better attitude.  This is also very easy to assess each day in terms of progress and practical improvements because you can set goals for yourself and mark them off on the calendar as you achieve them.  Don’t set your goals too high because you may not reach them and you may get discouraged too early.  Set easy goals at first and pat yourself on the back when you achieve them.  Save the improvements for after you have first proven yourself to be serious about following a plan.

Improving your mental attitude is really not that hard at any given time.  The hard part comes when you first begin to feel that your plan is no longer interesting and you lose your excitement for improving. This is why it is good to increase your goal after a while and continue to mark the calendar even when you fail to live up to your goals.  At least you are watching your progress and that is a lot more than you were doing before you started this new plan!  Simple observation of yourself results in a positive improvement because you are applying the most powerful tool you have to your life.  That’s your own mind!  Improving your mind starts with using your mind and the improvements will naturally follow from there.  It just takes a little common effort and some perseverance and you will find that your attitude will change at dramatic levels once the basic foundations of the plan have been set into order.  America wasn’t built in a day and neither was the Empire State Building but they started with a good plan that they stuck to and finally carried out.  You can also improve your attitude and eventually make yourself into a person who is full of happiness and bliss 100% of the time.  If you believe you can do it, then it will come true!

Attitude is Everything

Whoever said that “Attitude is everything” must have been joking right?  What do they mean “attitude is everything”?  Don’t they see that life has its limitations and there are only certain things you can do according to the laws of nature?  You may have heard this kind of talk before or thought it to yourself and then you might have brushed off that old saying “Attitude is everything” and figured it was just something that people like to say.  This, unfortunately, was a bit of a mistake.  If you had looked a little further, you might have discovered that attitude is, indeed, everything and the saying has a lot more power than you might have first recognized.

It is commonly known, according to many great spiritual teachings, that the power of the mind is actually infinite.  It is certainly the case that there are limitations in terms of the time and space.  It may take you a while to do something or the problems you may face could seem insurmountable in terms of the limitations of your problems.  Still, the potential that your mind is capable of reaching is indeed infinite and this has been proven over and over throughout the history of mankind.

Attitude is indeed everything because the way you look at something actually affects the way it appears and ultimately changes that thing into something else after you have looked at it.  Great scientists like Albert Einstein and Werner Heisenberg have proven this fact through amazing scientific experiments that show how the observer of an object actually affects the way an object behaves in time and space.  They have proven that our minds are intimately connected to the world around us and actually affect things in a very real way.  We see this take place in even the simplest of things each day.

If you look at the whole world as a terrible place full of war and famine and disease and death, then the world becomes this exact thing for you and you will experience pain and misery everywhere you go.  If you look at the world as a great school where immortal souls pass through and take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities to grow and evolve themselves to become even greater than when they first started, then the world will seem a wonderful place full of opportunities and blessed challenges for you to take advantage of.  Everything you see around you will change so that even the worst tragedy could be seen as something beautiful and like a completely different event than what another person might see.  The entire scene is based in your attitude and therefore, attitude becomes everything.

When you consider these ideas from the perspective of just one lifetime, you can then imagine what 1000 lifetimes might do for a person who decides to work on their attitude and make it better and better each year.  Their attitude could grow to such potential that it could transform, not only the world in front of them, but other worlds and galaxies far, far away.  Their mind could reach to the stars and transform the heavens and the entire universe so that it might expand to something bigger and better than it had ever been before.  Then such a thing as an attitude could indeed be said to be “Everything”.

As you can see, the saying “Attitude is everything” may not be just a simple little saying as you might have first thought.  It may be that there is infinite potential in the power of your mind and that someday you will reach to the stars and change things in ways that you never thought possible.  You, yourself may become the “Everything” that you always dreamed you could be.  It all starts with a simple decision to change your attitude and start to improve yourself in the ways that you have always known you could do.  The first step to a change of attitude begins right now and may eventually be something that lasts an eternity.

Test Yourself to See if You’ve Got a Bad Attitude

Here is a simple test to see if you’ve got a bad attitude.  Do you see a lot more people in the world who have a better situation than the one you were born into?  Does it seem unfair that all the bad things have happened to you and not to others?  Do you feel like you got cheated somehow and that life isn’t really fair?  If you answered “yes” to two or more of those questions then you probably have a “bad attitude”.

The truth of the matter is, life is completely fair to everyone.  This is not something that a lot of people like to hear. It puts the responsibility on you to act and make things better for yourself and responsibility is not something that a lot of people are interested in. In fact, if this is something that makes you angry to hear, you most certainly are suffering from a bad attitude yourself.

Think of the fact that life is full of challenges and tragedies. Nobody has all the answers to life or understands the situations that others have gone through. Some people have been through worse than others and there is always someone who has been through worse than you.  Still, you can never imagine the fact that these others who have been through worse, have somehow managed to keep their head up high and to maintain a positive attitude regardless of their fate.

The difference between a good attitude and a bad attitude doesn’t come down to relative standards of who has been through worse than someone else.  The difference depends on whether or not you can accept the things that have come your way and face them as though they were placed there for a reason.  If you are ready to face them with a positive attitude no matter what and make the best of everything that comes your way, then a bad attitude will never be something that you will possess. If you refuse to accept what life has presented to you and refuse to overcome the negative emotions that oftentimes well up inside you, then “bad attitude” will soon become your middle name.

It all comes down to the way you look at your own personal life.  It’s impossible to really know what others have been through and therefore impossible to judge a bad attitude from the outside.  The only attitude you can really judge is your own.  So what is the verdict?  Do you believe that everything has happened to you for a reason and that you want to face your life as if it were a special gift basket of problems made especially for you to overcome?  Do you want to take on those problems with the sense that everything was purposefully placed there just for the reason of making you into the best person you could ever be?  If you are willing to do this, you can certainly say that a bad attitude will be a thing of the past for you and there will never be another person who can judge you for who you are.  You will certainly become a person with an attitude for success.

A bad attitude is actually not so hard to overcome but the real problem comes at the beginning when a person is trying to decide if they really want to believe that life is fair or not.  There doesn’t seem to be enough evidence to determine if life is truly fair, so we could determine people tend to stick with their bad attitude just because it is familiar to them and comfortable.  The trick to starting to overcome a bad attitude is to recognize how much better a person’s life is when they constantly carry a “good attitude” everywhere they go.  Almost instantly, life begins to improve around them and they begin to see rewards from the new attitude they have decided to take.  There may be some challenges along the way but, the longer they keep their good attitude, the more the benefits start to pile up and the greater things start to become. If you have a bad attitude, try it out for a weekend and see what its like to have a good one.  You might just be surprised at the changes that will come your way.

Obtain Self Confidence with a Positive Attitude

Think about a self confident person that you know and admire. Close your eyes, and really think about them. Think about the things they have recently done or said. Think about how they act when a problem arises. I’ll bet that the person you are thinking about has a positive attitude that shines through in almost everything they say or do, and especially when there is a problem to be solved.

The self confidence that they have is more than likely a result of the positive attitude. You can’t have one without the other, and any person that does have one without the other is more than likely putting on an act. A positive attitude gives you self confidence.

When you have a positive attitude, you think clearly. You react to bad situations more appropriately. People who are negative can rarely rattle your cage. You see situations, life, and yourself in a very different way when you have a positive attitude - and that automatically creates self confidence.

People with good attitudes rarely dwell on the negative - not even the negative things about themselves. When an overweight positive person looks in the mirror, they don’t say ‘I’m fat.’ They say ‘I need to lose some weight.’ Instead of complaining about a problem, they stated a solution to the problem. Something as small as the way something is stated is proof of self confidence. If a positive high school student isn’t doing well in one of his subjects, he doesn’t say ‘I’m stupid.’ He says ‘I need to study.’ No complaint - just a solution to a problem.

Try this out with yourself to determine whether you have a positive attitude that already has, or will, create self confidence. Pay attention to the things that you say about yourself, or think about yourself, and write them down each day. After about a week, go back and read the statements. Don’t cheat! Be sure to write things down in the exact words you thought them in! Are you positive or negative about yourself?

If you are positive, good for you! If you are negative, it’s time to start working on your attitude, so you can build up your self confidence. The beauty of this is that the only thing you really have to work on is your attitude - the self confidence will arrive all on its own!

Some Great Positive Attitude Quotes

Abraham Lincoln once met a man who he really didn’t like.  The man kept annoying him and Abe couldn’t understand what it was that made him have to act like that all the time.  In a famous quote, he said  “I don’t like that man.  I must get to know him better.” This quote embodies one of the great sentiments about people that we sometimes forget to incorporate into our lives.

There are many people in the world who don’t make sense to us and who we wish were different than the way they are.  In fact, there are many people that we would simply do better to just avoid rather than try to understand them.  Still, Abe Lincoln’s quote is a great sentiment for many of us to learn by because it teaches us that we don’t always see people for who they truly are and we may be too quick to judge a person who has been through something that may have been harder than we can imagine.

Everybody is born into a certain life and is faced with overcoming the difficulties that are presented to them.  If we are faced with some people who are extremely hard to endure, it may be that there is a lesson in there for us to learn about the problems that others face in their lives.  It may be that we can stretch our minds and our hearts to incorporate compassion and understanding into our relationships and make things better for ourselves and others.  Learning to look past some of the initial problems we see in others and find that silver lining in their cloud is a great talent and an ability that can define a leader.  This was the kind of leadership that our 16th president embodied and why he became such a great emancipator for so many people.

Another great quote that expresses the essence of a positive attitude is by Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Emerson once said “The sun shines and warms and lights us and we have no curiosity to know why this is so; but we ask the reason of all evil, of pain, and hunger, and mosquitos and silly people.”  Emerson’s words are a real wake up call for many people.  They may think to themselves, have they ever felt the need to wake up every morning and see the first glimmer of light as it begins to glow in the night sky?  Have they noticed how fast the sky begins to brighten up upon the first evidence of daylight?  Have they noticed how long it takes after that before the actual sun can be seen on the horizon?  Have they noticed the magnificence of those first sun beams as they peak over the horizon and burn a bright fire against your eye?

These things that can be witnessed each morning by everyone on the planet are more than often ignored by millions of sleeping people.  This amazing and monumental event is seen as nothing because it happens everyday and has been pushed into the background of our subconscious mind.  The sun indeed provides all life to the world and is an amazing phenomenon too great to even imagine its intensity.  Still, somehow this is all lost to us against a long list of other problems and concerns that plague us each day.

Keeping a positive attitude each day is something that can only come through discipline and effort at first. Once we have created a lot of bad habits and negative attitudes, they take a concerted discipline to overcome.  Once we overcome them, however, we may begin to see great things in both the people we thought we could never like and the magnificent sun that we never noticed before.

Benefits of a Positive Attitude

You’ve probably heard over and over again that you should have a positive attitude, or that you should think positive thoughts. What you may not have heard about is how you can benefit from a positive attitude or positive thoughts. In fact, there are many benefits to a positive attitude that you may not have ever heard about.

A positive attitude makes you feel better in general. If you decide that you will face your day with a positive attitude, you feel better - both mentally and physically.  You will also find that you work more efficiently because when you have a positive attitude, your thinking becomes clearer.

A positive attitude reduces and prevents stress as well. When you are faced with problems, you won’t feel as stressed as you would if you had a negative attitude. The positive attitude allows you to look at the situation in a different light, and finding solutions becomes easier.

A positive attitude is contagious. When you are positive in your thoughts, words, and actions, those around you are greatly affected. It may take a little longer to affect some, but with enough exposure to your positive attitude, everyone around you will benefit. Alternately, you are affected by the positive attitudes of those around you.

A positive attitude allows you to sleep better. The positive attitude you have allows you to stop worrying about problems and go to sleep. When you get the proper amount of sound sleep, you are able to continue to be positive the following day, and deal with the problems you had yesterday in a positive way.

A positive attitude allows you to have more productive interaction with others - improving your relationships. You will find that you are better able to focus on the positive aspects of a relationship, as opposed to the negative aspects. The negative aspects of the relationship may even improve greatly - simply because you have a positive attitude.

You entire life is affected in one way or another by your attitude. Your work, learning, personal and business relationships, your health, your self-image, and your confidence all improve and benefit simply by adopting a positive attitude, thinking positive thoughts, and reacting to situations in a positive way.

How Our Attitudes Affect Our Health

We do several things to protect our health, such as eating right, exercising, dressing warm in cold weather, taking vitamins, practicing good hygiene and avoiding people who have contagious illnesses, such as the flu or colds. After taking all those precautions, many people still jeopardize their health simply by having poor attitudes.

Attitude affects every aspect of our lives - for better or worse - including our overall health. The mind is incredibly powerful. Have you ever heard the expression ‘I think, therefore I am’? Well, that probably means that you exist, because you think - but you should learn to look at it from a different point of view ‘I think I’m well, therefore I am.’

Some people look for things to be wrong with them. Some might call them hypochondriacs, but mostly, they just always expect the worst - even from their own bodies. This mindset can actually cause illness. This has been proven in scientific experiments where people who believe they are ill are given drugs to treat the ‘illness’ that aren’t actually drugs at all - they are basically sugar pills. But the person, believing they were being treated with medication for their illness, recovered, and no longer felt ill.

Alternately, people who really are ill have found that they heal faster when they stay in a positive frame of mind. This positive mindset allows them to follow their doctor’s orders easier, and expect good things to come from the treatment. They look forward to the things they will do once they are well - and in most cases the mind, in its own mysterious way, takes those thoughts and helps the body heal faster.

A positive attitude helps prevent specific health problems as well, such as migraine headaches, stomach ulcers, heart problems, and muscle aches. This is because when a person has a positive attitude, they have considerably reduced stress levels. Stress can cause headaches, stomach ulcers, heart problems, muscle aches, and a variety of other health problems.  By reducing stress, you reduce the potential for these health problems.

A positive attitude does not guarantee that you will never have a health problem, it just reduces the possibility, and then it works in your favor to overcome any health problems that you do experience.

Positive Attitudes Are Seldom Born - They Are Learned

Have you ever seen a baby that is hungry or needs a diaper change? They cry. Actually, they scream their heads off. No matter how fast you are moving to fix the problem, it isn’t fast enough for them! They will scream until the problem is solved, and depending on how old they are, they may continue to pout for several minutes after the problem is solved. Babies have bad attitudes.

They have bad attitudes because they haven’t learned how to have a positive attitude yet. None of us are naturally born with a positive attitude - it is learned. We learn a great deal of our attitudes - and even some of our personality - from the people around us, and from their treatment of us.

Kids who are abused often have bad attitudes - until they get out of the abusive situation and learn how to have good attitudes while being nurtured and loved. Sometimes, they don’t get out of the bad situation until they are old enough to strike out on their own. For those, often, a positive attitude is way off on the horizon - but with some effort, they will get there. Kids who are nurtured and loved from the beginning of their lives usually grow up to have positive attitudes…because they learned how to have a positive attitude from the people that were nurturing and loving them.

Even if a person doesn’t learn how to have a good attitude in childhood, it can still be learned as an adult. We are never too old to learn. Surrounding yourself with positive people and limiting your time with negative people is one of the first steps to a positive attitude - because you will learn from those positive people.

Think about an adult that you know who constantly has a bad attitude. Do they scream their heads off and pout? Does it remind you of a baby? If you have a bad attitude yourself, that may be how people are seeing you! If this is the case, start taking steps to learn a positive attitude immediately!

Developing a New Attitude

Did you ever notice that the most successful people are always very positive and they don’t let things bother them for very long?  How do they do that?  The answer is that there is a very powerful energy that they have inside of them that makes it easier for them to turn away from negative things and toward more positive things.  Some people are born with this ability but some people have to work at it to achieve it.  Unfortunately, most people don’t have it and find it too hard to get it for themselves.  This is because it takes real perseverance and effort over a long period of time to develop a new attitude about life.  Here are some tips for getting started and doing whatever you can to stick to your plan.

The most important thing about developing a new attitude is to first recognize that your attitude is bad to begin with. Most people don’t want to admit this anyway so their plan never gets off the ground.  Admitting that you don’t have such a great attitude is probably the most significant part of your future plan because it will help you to be able to see what you need to work on.  Once you have admitted that you need help, you will be willing to try some new things like going to a group or taking up a new hobby to improve yourself.  From there, you will gain some extremely positive ideas that can help you to develop an even better plan for the future.

After you have decided to create a new attitude for yourself, you can also make a commitment to finally improve yourself in some area that you had always wanted to improve but never had the courage to do so.   Some people decide to take a public speaking course such as Toastmasters and others decide to take up drawing or painting.  You can join a self-help group or begin to do formal meditation or yoga to improve yourself.  Any of these things will help and they will all lead you to more ideas that could later be added to your list once you have begun.  It is important, however, to have a long term goal and to stick to that overall plan in some sense.  Otherwise, your plan to develop a new attitude might fall by the wayside as soon as you meet your first new friend or decide that you would rather go shopping with your group members instead of practicing your yoga routine!

A long term plan is one of the hardest things for people to stick by but it is paramount to developing a sincerely new attitude.  Major changes to a person’s attitude don’t happen overnight so there must be a dedication to stay on the task and keep improving your plan over the long term.  Eventually, over a period of many months or even years, you will find that you have become a completely different person from who you used to be.   You no longer will feel depressed at all and you will never feel scared or worried about anything.  This is true!  It is really possible to eliminate all the negative emotions from your life if you truly want to.  Say goodbye to fear, grief, shame and guilt forever.  They are useless emotions that don’t help anyone at all!  You can learn to weed these emotions out of your life over the long term and eventually enjoy a more happy and fulfilling life.

As the saying goes, “Many are called but few are chosen” and this is your big chance to choose yourself as a person who is going to turn their life around and make something better of themselves.  Getting serious at the onset is the most important part of the long term plan.  How much of a serious heart do you have in you?  Can you trust yourself to stick by a plan, even the smallest of plan, for a long period of time?  How much can you depend on yourself to follow through and do this great task that you are setting in front of yourself?  It is all up to you 100% and nothing can stop you if you are indeed very serious.  Developing a new attitude can be the greatest goal a person ever makes for themselves and it can be the beginning of the best thing you have ever done.  Make the move now and make it for keeps! You can do it!

Facing Problems with a Positive Attitude

When problems arise, or we find ourselves in less than ideal situations, we often try to solve the problem or improve the situation with a bad attitude. In most cases, that doesn’t work, and in fact can often make the situation even worse. It is extremely important to face problems, or bad situations, with a positive attitude.

A positive attitude puts us into a frame of mind that is more open. With an open mind, we are better able to see different perspectives and views. With those different perspectives, we see the problem differently, and therefore we see different potential solutions.

When we face our problems with a positive attitude, that attitude shines through and affects the people that are around us - including the people who are also trying to help solve the problem or improve the situation. Your positive attitude plants seeds of a positive attitude in them, which quickly grows into a full blown attitude. Then, they have an open mind, and different perspectives and views, and they see different potential solutions as well.

The great thing is that since we are all different, the solutions that they see may not be the same as yours - which gives all of you even more options for how the problem can be solved.

Facing a problem with a positive attitude goes even further than that. That positive attitude allows us to experience lower levels of stress, which means that we won’t make the problem worse by getting stressed out over it. That positive attitude will even help you sleep at night. Often, people who have problems take it out on other people, which can cause hurt feelings and tense relationships.  A positive attitude keeps you from doing that.

Insomnia is a common symptom for people who have problems - unless they have a positive attitude. Positive people know that the problem will still be there tomorrow, and that a solution will be found. This enables them to stop worrying about it and go to sleep. As you can see, the benefits of facing a problem with a positive attitude are far more numerous than the benefits of facing it with a bad attitude - in case you missed it, there are no benefits to facing a problem with a bad attitude - so you may as well do it with a good attitude!
